The Bantam age level is a game of 12 man football that caters to players who are 13 & 14 years old. NOTE: The Bantam age group was formerly for players 14 years of age only. As of 2012, the Minor Bantam age group (13 years) was eliminated and both age groups (13 & 14 years of age) have now been combined together as Bantam.
They play on a standard size field (65 yds x 110 yds) and play four, 12 minute quarters (regular stop time).
Typically there are around 16-20 Bantam teams in the league (some clubs have more than 1 team) with the finals played during Football Manitoba's Championship weekend (October 27-28 in 2012).
Teams play 8 or more regular season games starting around the middle of August. The top 8 teams in each division qualify for playoffs which take place in October. The playoff format is currently 1 vs 8, 2 vs 7, etc.
Players specialize in positions, either on offense or defense. However, there is the flexibility to play more than one position during the season and individual games.
As a general practice, practices begin in late July. Bantam teams typically practice 3 to 4 times per week and play games on Saturdays or Sundays. Practices are generally 2 hours or less. Teams are designated as "Saturday" teams or "Sunday" teams before the start of the season. The number of practices may also vary based on the time of year and need (such as 4 practices per week before the initial game of the season and 3 per week after that. The number of practices and duration are at the discretion of each individual coach.
Mustang players are provided with a helmet, shoulder pads, game jersey, football pants, etc. as part of the registration fees. Other equipment items are required and are not included in the registration costs. These items are relatively minor and will be discussed prior/during equipment fitting sessions.
